🥇 The fundamentals of a successful football strategy
Once the requirements across various levels in football are clearly defined, the next step involves developing a football strategy encompassing a clear game idea. This concept is concretized in a playing model with associated principles of play and is integrated into its unique training methodology.
This game idea and playing model are crucial for a club's success and shouldn't be completely discarded with every new coach. On the contrary, when selecting a coach, attention should be given to whether they can implement the desired game idea of the club.
Research by football strategist Mads Davidsen reveals that in the top 5 leagues, over 75% of clubs lack a sustainable model in which the game idea is clearly defined.
Every team, club, and association that plans for the long term must develop and internalize its own game idea. Only this idea gives a team its own identity and enables a club to pursue a long-term, planned path. This path will impact all other areas, including scouting, training concepts, and selecting the best possible personnel.
Cultural and local circumstances play a crucial role in planning and executing this football strategy or developing a game idea. The football history of a country and the traditions of a club need consideration as they can exert significant influence on a game idea.
The football strategy of a club founded as a workers' club in the 19th century should differ, for example, from that of a club established in modern times through affluent sponsors.
Proud and offensively oriented Catalans would probably never embrace a defensive style of play focused on counterattacks. They aim for a commanding and dominant approach to the game. These deeply rooted cultural factors are ingrained from the youth academy to the first team.
The success of the "working-class club" FC Liverpool under their manager Jürgen Klopp, who embodies corresponding values, also emphasizes the significance of these aspects.
📕 Football Vocabulary (Tactics, Strategy, Formation, System?)
Tactics Enthusiasts are a unique breed – they relish exploring the nuances of the game. In discussions about football tactics, terms often get mixed up, yet these enthusiasts stress the precise use of each term. Tactics, Strategy, Formation, System, and Principles of Play – these words might sound similar, but each carries its unique meaning. Let's delve into and dissect these terms further.
Tactics vs. Strategy
Like many other football terms, these have their roots in the military. Carl von Clausewitz, a significant military strategist of the 19th century, defined tactics as 'the art of deploying forces in a single battle.' Strategy, on the other hand, regards 'the art of using individual battles for the purpose of the war.' In football, a single battle equates to a match, while the war spans an entire season. Tactical considerations always refer to the individual game. What formation will the team use? Which opponent needs special attention? Which areas on the field can lead to scoring a goal? Strategic considerations, however, refer to the bigger picture: Does the team aim for more possession than the opponent or prefers a counter-attacking style? Should the opponent be aggressively pressed across the entire field or does the team prefer a more defensive style of play? A team's tactical setup can vary from game to game, while the team's strategy should be evident over multiple games.
Formation vs System
The term "Formation" also originates from military jargon, describing the arrangement of a war army on the battlefield. This is exactly what it signifies in football as well. When a coach lines up their team with four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards, they play in a 4-4-2 formation. Commentators often use the term "4-4-2 system" in such cases. However, strictly speaking, the term "System" implies something different. The formation explains how players occupy space on the field. On the other hand, the term "System" refers to how players implement this formation. Thus, two teams might play with the same formation but employ entirely different systems on the pitch.
